Project Tiger's - Kanha

Tiger, Kanha National ParkRanthambore National Park and the Kanha National Park were the first successful examples of Project Tiger in India. Both the park saw multi-fold increase in the annual number of visitors. The United States National Park Service and the Centre of Environmental in Ahmedabad worked jointly in India from 1989 to 1991 to install a multi-faced project involving setting up of National Park like museum, various publications and two orientation centers. The bio-diversity of the Kanha Park along with the latest features improved the visitor numbers. Several new features were introduced, tourist infrastructure was improved, as well as lots of research, security and monitoring of the project was involved. It made Kanha as of the most enviable national parks of the world.

Kanha National Park project led to the rise of pre-eminent rise in the number of protected areas in the country. it led to tiger conservation and saving the barasingha which would have disappeared from this had the project not been put in place. In last decade, the official figures for the Tigers have increased from deadly low figure of 66 to 400-500 ranges.

However, there have been some long term and present day challenges still loom large at the project along with its fame and distinction. There are 13 nations that have been termed at the “Tiger States” including, China, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Russia, Indonesia and some states in the Indo-Chinese region. However, the Kanha region still faces one of the biggest threats of tiger poaching in its region. Tiger has been the symbol of majesty and power in most of the Asian cultures. It has been termed as the Lord of the Jungle and its bones has been used in various preparations of traditional medicines. India accounts for nearly 60 percent of world’s Tiger population and it may be losing at least one tiger a day to the poachers. The total world Tiger population is less than 5000 which mean that if poaching is not stopped with strictest measures tigers will be extinct by as early as 2020.

Tiger conservation is largely related to the future of Kanha National park and may tourists each year flock down from various destinations to see the National animal of India in its natural habitat. The neighboring villages live on the either side of the park. There is large level of cooperation from these villages and nearly 150,000 inhabitants living in them. Kanha project offers its advantages but with the constant population explosion in the country, the project becomes harder and difficult each day in order to protect the preserved land.
