Elephants, Corbett National ParkNamed after Jim Corbett, a famous conservationist, the Corbett National Park, is the first wildlife reserve of India. Sprawling over 500 sq km at the foothills of the mighty Himalayan ranges, Corbett National park became famous when it launched Project Tiger in 1973.

Over 600 species of resident and migratory birds have been sighted, including blossom headed parakeet, crested serpent eagles and the red jungle fowl. Some of the other birds such Little Green Heron, Darter, Crested Hawk Eagle, Pond Heron, Pallas Fishing Eagle, Booted Hawk Eagle, Himalayan Grey-headed Fishing Eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Cinereous Vulture, Kestrel, Black Partridge, Kaleej Pheasant, Red Jungle-fowl, Common Peafowl, Redwattled Lapwing, Spur winged Lapwing, Pin-tailed Green Pigeon, Blue Rock Pigeon, Turtle Dove, to name a few. 34 species of reptiles, 7 species of amphibians, 17 species of fish and 37 species of dragonflies have also been registered.

Predations like tigers and leopards can be found in plenty due to the natural habitat. Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat and Leopard Cat are some of the smaller animals of the cat family found here. Other mammals include herds of elephants, four kinds of deer, barking deer, hog, sambar, black bug and chital. There are also sloth bear and Himalayan black bears, Indian Grey Mongoose, otters, yellow-throated martens, ghoral (goat-antelopes), Indian pangolins, and langurs and rhesus monkeys. The silence of the night is filled with the calls of the Owls and Nightjars.

Reptiles like the Indian marsh crocodile, Gharial, King cobra, common krait, and the cobra can also be found.

Sunrise at DhikalaDhikala: It is the most famous among the popular tourist attractions in Corbett. Awe-inspiring view of the Patli Dun valley, with the Kanda ridge in the backdrop, can send chills up your spine.

Bijrani: The drier region with its vast diverse vegetation had made Bijrani a good hunting ground during the British era.

Garjia Temple: Dedicated to Garjia Devi is a famous temple, 14 kms away from Ramnagar, and on the way to Ranikhet. It is a huge rock in the midst of river Kosi.

Corbett Wildlife Museum: Situated at Dhangarhi, this museum houses the belongings and displays the life history of Jim Corbett.

Best time to visit:

The best recommended time to visit Corbett National Park is from 15th November to 15th June because during this period of time all the tourism zones of Corbett are open for visitors. During the rest of the year there is a danger of the roads being washed away due to monsoons.

How to reach:

By Railways: Nearest railway station is at Ramnagar (51 km) from where the park can be reached by road.

By Roadways: Delhi (310 km), Lucknow (405 km) and Ramnagar (51 km).

By Airways: Nearest airport is at Phoolbagh, Pantnagar (50 km); Delhi (300 km) is the nearest international airport.
