Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi

New Delhi is getting ready ot host the Commonwealth games 2010 next year. As the deadline approaches, the city is buzzing with more activity to lure the tourists and sportsmen alike. The mega event is expected to be well supported with facilities and amenities that will be world class and at par with the best facilities in the world. Delhi is getting a complete face lift not only cosmetically but also in infrastructural aspect. The total expenditure done by the Government of India is nearly $17.5 billion that will not only modernize the complete capital but will also offer adequate infrastructure to the guests coming to the country. Apart from the capital investments, the government has also offered tax sops to hotels and resorts for Commonwealth games. This will help in bridging the gap between the accommodation facilities and the rise in demand during the time when the games are being held.

Infrastructure

New Delhi is the capital of India and it is already well supported with adequate infrastructure. However, it is again undergoing a complete facelift for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The city will witness new highways, expressways, flyovers and a brand new mass transit system for well-maintained transportation system. Besides, the government is also spending on power plants, public transport system and better water facilities during the games. The city will also witness better health care system in few months.

The new game venues that are being constructed will add to better facilities in the city to host such world-class events. The older venues are also being given a completely new-look with their ongoing renovations. The overall idea is to not only add better facilities to the city but also city beautification. Delhi will have better traffic management, more parking spaces along with better health care and added security services.

A modern and brand new Games village spread over 63.5 hectares is also being constructed at the banks of River Yamuna. The new village will have a capacity to house 8500 athletes and officials. It will be closely located to major tourist attractions in the capital.

Transport

Delhi transportation system is one of the major concerns for the planners. According to the new planning structure, new flyovers, cloverleaves and bridges have been planned to offer better connectivity and transportation between games venues, hospitals and the Games Village. Delhi has two ring roads and plans are underway to make them signal free apart from widening of the National Highways.

A four lane, 2.2 km long tunnel is planned between Linking Road and Lodhi Road that will provide better connection between the Games Village and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. 9 corridors of High Capacity Bus System are being planned that will be effective by 2010. Delhi Metro is also being expanded to provide better transportation and more convenient commutation via public transport systems. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is also undergoing complete renovation and a two-tier terminal is coming up till 2010 Commonwealth Games that will have top level for departure and bottom level for arrivals. The airport shall have 130 check in counters, 55 aerobridges, 30 parking bays, 72 immigration counters and 15 X-ray screening areas that will enable travelers with speedy check in and lessen the wait times at the airports. The international airport will be well connected with 6-lane National Highway 8 and Delhi Metro.

Energy

The city will have a enhanced power plant capacity with power production increased to 7000 mega watt from its present capacity of 4500 megawatts. This new enhanced capacity will meet the increased energy requirements during Commonwealth Games 2010, New Delhi. New power plants are also under construction along with streamlining of existing ones.

Other Preparations

The Commonwealth Games 2010 will have influx of lot of English speaking tourists. The government has implemented a new program to teach English to low-income level individuals who will be in regular touch with the tourists, athletes and officials. These people include drivers, waiters, security personnel and service staff. Moreover, the Delhi High Court has also instructed the migrant beggars to be deported to their home states.
