Tour Operators: India regaining ground
17th Jan 2010 Tour Operators are reporting a rebound in travel to India as arrivals return to levels seen before the recession. Tourist arrivals to the nation fell 3.3% to 5.11 million in 2009. Numbers fell dramatically following the recession but have steadily climbed in recent months. Australia was the ninth largest market for India in 2008. Adventure World marketing manager Neil Rodgers said bookings had rebounded.
“We have had a two-for-one deal for the Golden Triangle which has had a huge amount of interest,” said an operator. “We are also seeing a lot of our bookings take up grades to heritage properties and more interest in our fully independent travel tours.” A sales and marketing manager for another travel company, Praful Albuquerque, said business to India had increased. “We are seeing the market bounce back, especially with our two-for-one offer for travel between April and August, which is the low season.” Albuquerque said October’s Commonwealth Games is also expected to generate interest.
