US agency to help deploy new safety system at Chennai airport

22nd July 2011

The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will help implement the Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) used for flight navigation at the Chennai International Airport. GBAS is a critical safety system that uses global positioning system (GPS) for efficient, safe navigation and flight operations such as landing, departure, and surface operations within its area of coverage. According to a report in The Hindu Business Line, the pilot project will provide assistance to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the installation and operational commissioning of a pilot GBAS system. Details are likely to be announced soon in Chennai. J Randolph Babbitt, Administrator of the Federal Administration Aviation, said his agency would work closely with AAI for developing GBAS system.
