been attracting tourists, due to its geographical positioning. It is perhaps
the only place in India, when at full moon, it is possible to enjoy the
unique experience, of seeing the sun set and the moon rise over the ocean
simultaneously. The sight of Sunrise and Sunset at Cape Comorin is something,
which cannot be forgotten easily. Kanyakumari is also famous as a pilgrimage
for Hindus. History
Kanyakumari is a popular pilgrimage centre of the Hindus. It is dedicated to the goddess Kanyakumari - Youthful Virgin, who is an incarnation of Devi,- Sivas wife. Legends say that the Virgin Goddess, did penance to obtain the hand of Lord Siva. When she was unsuccessful in her attempt, she vowed to remain a virgin (Kanya). Hence the name Kanyakumari.

How to Reach
Rail, road and air connect Kanyakumari. By air, the nearest Airport is at Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). This Airport is well connected with national as well as International flights. From Thiruvananthapuram one can take a taxi or bus to Kanyakumari. Kanyakumari is also well connected by train services with Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and all major places in India and almost all the Southern cities. By road, this town is also well connected by bus services from all places in the Southern states.
Tourist Places
Vivekananda Rock Memorial
On the sea side, is built a large, beautiful memorial, dedicated to Swami
Vivekanand. Here Swami Vivekanand did his meditation. The memorial was built
in 1970. It houses a huge metal statue of Vivekananda. To reach this memorial
one has to take the ferry services or boats plying between the rock memorial
and the mainland. The merger of three seas- Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and
Indian Ocean can be seen from these rocks. While looking at the horizon,
one gets a feeling, that nature has sprayed various colors on water. Though
the structure is well constructed, it has been very badly maintained.Gandhi Memorial
Built in memory of Gandhiji, the memorial is a good example of modern architecture. Here, the last remains are kept for public viewing. The pot containing the remains of Gandhiji, is placed in such manner that the first sunlight falls on it.
Others
GUGANATHASWAMY TEMPLE - This 1000-year-old temple, is said to have been built by Raj Raja Cholan.
NAGERCOIL - The presiding Deity of this temple is Nagaraja, but the images of Shiva and other Gods are also kept.
THE KUMARI AMMAN TEMPLE - This temple is dedicated to Parvathi, as Devi Kanya- the Virgin Goddess-- who did penance, to obtain the hand of Lord Siva. The temple is situated on the beach and there are long queues to enter the temple.
UDAYAGIRI FORT - in the 18th century King Marthanda Varma built this fort. This fort had a foundry for casting guns. The fort also has, the tomb of De Lennoy, a trusted general of the king. He trained the Marthanadas army on western lines.
