Buffett & Clark Biography
Mary Buffett enjoyed a thriving and prosperous career working in the management of a music publishing company and the operation of an import-export business during the 1970s. But in 1981, her fortune changed dramatically--romantically and fiscally--when she fell in love and married Peter Buffett. Her new father-in-law just happened to be the famous Warren Buffett, who had amassed riches surpassing $20 billion by playing the stock market. Suddenly, Mary found herself a member of one of the world's wealthiest families--and privy to the absolute best advice on investing.
As Mary recalls, Warren Buffett was incredibly generous with his insights, as well as his money. Each Christmas morning, he gave each of his children and their spouses $10,000 worth of stock in a business he deemed promising--and urged them to make his gift pay off. Warren also taught his young grandchildren his secret to picking winning companies- look for products you know and like.
Mary's twin daughters learned their lessons well. When they were just eight-years-old, they urged Grandpa to buy shares in Pillsbury because it owned Burger King and Haagen-Dazs. A few years later, Pillsbury was bought out by Grand Metropolitan--at about double the price it was trading when the twins picked it.
Mary has many memories of Warren Buffett talking about his favorite subject: making money. Yet, the renowned investor carefully guarded his wealth-building strategies from strangers. Throughout her twelve year marriage to Peter Buffett, Mary was often instructed not to speak to anyone outside the family about Warren's investment methods.
In 1993, Mary and Peter were divorced. Mary was heartbroken, but not bitter. Within weeks, she was approached by several top literary agents, begging for a tell-all book about the man behind the billions. But she knew what truly made her former father-in-law fascinating: his unique philosophy on investing and phenomenal stock-picking record.
Teaming up with David Clark, a portfolio analyst and longtime Buffett family friend, Mary decided to write the definitive insider book on Warren Buffett's distinctive approach to profiting from the market, BUFFETTOLOGY: The Previously Unexplained Techniques That Have Made Warren Buffett the World's Most Famous Investor (A Fireside Book/ Simon & Schuster Trade Paperbacks; June 1999).
A popular keynote speaker, Mary Buffett now enjoys an international following as an expert "Buffettologist." She is also the CEO of Superior Assembly, a multi-million-dollar-a-year commercial and film editing company with clientele ranging from Coca-Cola to Madonna.
She currently makes her home in Santa Monica, California.
David Clark lives in Warren Buffett's home town, Omaha, Nebraska.
