Radin Biography
In 1993, Dr. Radin founded, and is presently Director of, the Consciousness Research Division (CRD) of the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).
The CRD applies scientific methods to study commonly reported but poorly understood experiences known as psychic phenomena. These include phenomena such as direct mind-matter interactions, precognition, and distant healing.
Prior to joining UNLV, Dr. Radin was a visiting Research Fellow at the Koestler Unit of Parapsychology, Department of Psychology, University of Edinburgh. There he refined and helped implement a sophisticated computer-based system for studying telepathy, and he initiated research on distant mental influence of human physiology.
Before that, he spent three years at Princeton University, where he conducted research on precognition and mind-matter interaction, and he directed interdisciplinary projects for a multi-departrnent program studying human information processing. He also spent a.year as a visiting scientist at SRI International, where he worked on what was then US-govemment classified research on psychic phenomena.
In more conventional research roles, he was a Principal Scientist at Contel, a Principal Member of the Technical Staff at GTE Laboratories, and a Member of the Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where for ten years he worked on advanced telecommunications systems and products.
He has a BSEE with Honors, magna cum laud., in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and an MS in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. in educational psychology, both from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
Dr. Radin was elected President of the Parapsychological Association in 1988, 1993, and is President-Elect for 1998. This is the only international professional society interested in psychic phenomena that is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dr. Radin has also served as a Counselor for the Society for Scientific Exploration from 1986 to 1994, and was Program Chair for the Society's annual meetings in 1987 and 1997.
His research awards include the Parapsychological Association's 1996 Outstanding Achievement Award, and the Rhine Research Center's Alexander Imich Award for advances in experimental parapsychology, also presented in 1996. He earned Special Merit Awards from GTE Laboratories in 1992, Contel in 1989, and Bell Laboratories in 1984.
He has won many competitive grants for psi research, including the Richard Hodgson Memorial Fund Grant at Harvard University; and the Bial Foundation, Portugal.
Dr. Radin's research has been reviewed in numerous magazines, including the New York Times Magazine, Psychology Today, Newsweek, Wired, and New Scientist. He has presented talks at Princeton University, Cambridge University, the Edinburgh International Science Festival, the American Statistical Association, the Wall Street Telecommunications Association, and the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
He has been featured on radio and TV programs throughout Australia, Europe and the United States, including "Horizon," "NOVA...... Discovery Magazine," "Ultrascience...... Mysterious Forces Beyond," "Unsolved Mysteries," and "Sightings."
In addition to The Conscious Universe Dr. Dean Radin has published 165 journal articles and technical reports. Before spending most of his time in the pursuit of scientific truths, he was a professional classical violinist and bluegrass fiddler. He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada.
