Various religions in India coexist which makes it’s the only country in the world to have the largest number of religions in one country. These religions have not only flourished but grown in strength as religion is an integral part of Indian life. It largely affects the personal lives of the people in day-to-day basis. It is a secular country where all religions are well honored equally by the state. In spite of numerous invasions, colonialism, persecutions and political upheavals the religious integrity of the country has withstood the test of times making it one of the rare countries in the world to do so.
India is known to be the land of spirituality and faith that is abode of various religions of the world. Four main religions of the world were born in this country – namely Hinduis, Jainism, Sikhism and Buddhism as well as Islam. Other religions were adapted by the Indian folk with the invaders, missionaries and travelers.Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism and Bahaism have also been followed in India since a very long time. The country has been a healthy placed for the survival of nearly all religions on its heartland. Although there are majority of Hindus but it is a creed known of its catholic outlook as well. In Hinduism, religion is just a means for human beings to communicate with God.
In the 6th century BC, the ritualistic attitude of Hinduism, took a churning turn, which led to the emergence of Jainism and Buddhism in the country. Jainism preached self-quest above all and is few of the ascetic of faiths that preaches its followers to live in the most Spartan manner. Buddhism spread across Far East and its origin stuffed out in the main land of origin. Buddhism was more iconoclastic as compared to Brahminism that quickly opted Buddha to be one of the ‘holy pantheons of gods.’
In order to understand India, it is important to understand its practices and religious beliefs. India is one land that led to the origin of few of the major religions and others that originated elsewhere strengthened on this land. Religion casts its shadow on every Indian right from its birth and follows him throughout his life.
